Image 3: Shiny helmets

To apply the weighing scale exercise to this image, I assessed the elements in the picture as follows:-
- The helmets are the brightest part of the image which makes them the initial focus for the viewer.
- Only the central person's profile is clear. The other faces are partly or largely obscured. The faces are also in partial shade.
Horizontally, the image elements are relatively symmetrical:-
- The line of shiny helmets stretches across the image, with the two closest on the left hand side and four smaller ones extending into the distance to the right.
- In the lower half, the strongest element is the persons profile which is quite central.
Vertically, the shaded faces do not overpower the shiny helmets, which I intended to be the main subject.
The judge awarded this image 10 out of 10, which was a surprise to me at the time. Having studied the photograph more deeply, I believe that the balance of the various elements noted above serve to highlight the reflections in the helmets. Furthermore, I was fortunate that the subject was rather different to the many other images in the competition.
