Viewfinder - fitting the frame to the subject

I chose Guildford Cathedral as the subject for this exercise. My first picture was taken looking across at the cathedral from a nearby hill. This "standard" shot is not particularly interesting, even as a record of the building. My position was too square to the building and the frontal light is not enhancing the structure.

I needed to move nearer the cathedral to make the subject fill the frame. I also took care to move slightly to the side so that the structure is emphasised by the shadows.

I chose a part of the exterior of the building showing the box-like style of architecture and a pattern of decorated drain pipes.

I moved away from the cathedral down the hill to a playground to take a number of shots of the cathedral standing against the clear sky. This is the image I preferred with the cathedral in the bottom right hand quarter of the frame.
