Vertical and Horizontal frames - part 5

Subject 12: Snow in the woods
The portrait frame should suit a vertical subject like trees. The snow in the foreground is the most prominent visual element, broken up by the snowy trees and their shadows. The sky in the background is possibly an unnecessary distraction in this case.
The snow on the ground appears to fill a larger portion of the image and the sky in the background is far less noticeable. The dark tree trunk on the left hand side and the small conifer on the right foreground give contrast and strength to the image. The diagonal line of the land dropping from left to right also adds interest to the picture.
The horizontal image seems to have much more impact than the vertical image for these reasons.
Subject 13: Tyrol bell
The bell itself is quite central in the frame However, this seems to be the appropriate position as it is framed by the trees on either side. Also the vertical beam of the gantry holding the bell is quite a prominent element on the one third line in the frame. This viewpoint was selected as I liked the sunlight reflected on the front face of the gantry and stairs. Also there is a nice shaping effect of the light on the bell.
In the horizontal frame, the bell and gantry remain the visual focus of the image. The human figure adds a sense of scale, but does not otherwise add positively to the picture. The vertical frame image is I feel the better one for this subject.
Subject 14: Seefeld Valley
The snowfield in the foreground is the initial visual focus, especially the wooden barn. The eye follows the fields across the frame and up into the mountains behind. There is a backdrop of dark triangles of forest surmounted by white peaks and sky.
The dark triangle of forest on the right hand side is larger and reduces the impact of the snowfield in the foreground. The tree on the right hand side in the sunlight sends the eye across the frame towards the backdrop of mountains and sky. The far mountains seem less dramatic as an element of the image. I feel that the vertical format has more impact in this case.
Subject 15: Seefeld town
The main visual interest is in the central panel of the frame. The foreground and sky are relatively empty.
The group of trees are now placed in the foreground of the picture. The town forms a descending diagonal line through the picture. The church is roughly on one third line from the right hand side. Compared to the vertical frame, there is also detailed interest in the small figures in the snow beside the church. The horizontal frame works better for this subject than the vertical.
